Here are the summaries for each passage on your worksheet. I have highlighted the key information and written a short summary for each one.
Passage 1 Summary
Although Vikings, Spanish (Columbus), and French explorers arrived in North America before the English, the English presence is considered the most important. This is because the thirteen English colonies they established eventually grew into the United States of America.
Passage 2 Summary
In April 1585, Sir Walter Raleigh sent an expedition led by his cousin, Sir Richard Grenville, to North America. Under the authority of Queen Elizabeth, their goal was to create an English colony that could serve as a base for attacking and stealing from Spanish treasure ships.
Passage 3 Summary
When the English colonists arrived at Roanoke Island, they tried to make friends with the local Aquascogoc tribe, but the natives were not interested. Tensions rose when the English accused the tribe of stealing a silver cup. In response, the English burned down the native village and had to defend their fort against attacks.
Passage 4 Summary
The colonists struggled because they were soldiers and adventurers who did not know how to farm, leading to hunger and disappointment over the lack of gold. Sir Richard Grenville eventually left to attack Spanish ships and return to England, leaving the colony to be gradually abandoned.
