ROME METHOD:
- R: Respiratory — pH opposite to PaCO2

- E: Equal — pH and HCO3 move in same direction
Definitions:
- Uncompensated or not compensated= Primary disorder present, no compensatory response yet; pH abnormal, only one value (PaCO2 or HCO3) abnormal
- Partial Compensation= Body is beginning to compensate; pH still abnormal, both PaCO2 and HCO3 are abnormal but moving toward correction
- Full or Compensated= pH is normal despite abnormal PaCO2 and HCO3; compensation has restored pH to normal range
