1. The troposphere is the lowest layer of the atmosphere and is important for life because it contains the air we breathe and where weather occurs. It is heated from the ground up, so temperature generally decreases with altitude. This layer holds most of the water vapor and clouds, which are essential for precipitation and climate regulation.
2. The stratosphere contains the ozone layer, which absorbs harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. This protects living organisms on Earth from DNA damage, skin cancer, and other health issues. Without the ozone layer, life as we know it would not be sustainable.
3. The thermosphere is the layer where auroras occur due to interaction between solar wind and Earth’s magnetic field. It is also where satellites orbit. Despite high temperatures (due to absorption of solar radiation), it would feel cold to a human because the air molecules are extremely sparse — there are too few to transfer heat effectively.
4. Clouds are primarily observed in the troposphere because this is the only layer with sufficient water vapor and the right temperature and pressure conditions for cloud formation. The troposphere contains about 75-80% of the atmosphere’s mass and nearly all its moisture, making it the primary region for weather phenomena including clouds, rain, and storms.
