Part C
Binary fission is the process by which a bacterium replicates its DNA and divides into two identical daughter cells. The process begins with a single cell containing one circular chromosome (a). The chromosome is copied, resulting in two identical chromosomes that move to opposite ends of the cell (b). The cell elongates, and a septum (wall) begins to form down the middle (c). Finally, the cell splits into two separate, genetically identical daughter cells (d). This is an asexual form of reproduction that allows bacteria to multiply rapidly under favorable conditions.
