- box and whisker plot - a way to visually represent the
five-number summary of a data set. It can also be called a
box plot.
- Example: Range = 90 - 10 = 80; IQR = Q3 - Q1 = 75 - 20 = 55.
- You try:
1. Range = 88 - 26 = 62; Q1 = 40; Q2 = 65; Q3 = 78; IQR = 78 - 40 = 38.
2. Sorted data: 71, 72, 73, 75, 78, 79, 80, 81, 84. Min = 71; Q1 = 73; Q2 = 78; Q3 = 80; Max = 84. Plot these on the number line.
3. Sorted data: 34, 63, 64, 68, 71, 73, 75, 76, 79, 80, 82, 82, 85, 88, 90, 94, 96. Min = 34; Q1 = 71; Q2 = 79; Q3 = 85; Max = 96. Draw number line from ~30 to 100 and plot the five-number summary.
Parent Tip: Review the logic above to help your child master the concept of box and whiskers worksheets.
