*The Voice of Nature*

An Aboriginal myth from northern Australia relates how, in the beginning, the voice of the 'Ancient' spoke each day from a great gary tree, and the tribe gathered around to listen. But as time went by, people grew weary of hearing the same words, so they said: "Can this sound still be heard, or has the voice of nature died?" Then the Ancient replied: "No, my voice lives on. It will never die." The story tells us that the voice of nature can be heard if we listen carefully. The ancient people knew this, and they lived in harmony with nature.

One day, the sky turned red and the ground shook. The people ran to the mountain top to escape the danger. They found the Ancient standing there, holding a large stone. He said: "This is the heart of the earth. If you take it, you will have power over nature, but you will also lose your connection with it."

The old man gave the stone to the first person who came to him. That person took the stone and left. But when he returned, he had lost his way. He was lost in the forest, and the animals would not help him. He could not find his way back to the tribe.

Then the second person came. She asked for the stone, but the Ancient refused. She said: "I don't want power. I want to live in peace with nature." The Ancient smiled and said: "You are worthy of the voice of nature."

And so, the stone remained with the Ancient, and the voice of nature continued to speak through the wind, the trees, and the rivers.

The tribe gathered around the great gary tree because the voice of the 'Ancient' spoke from it every day, and they came to listen to its wisdom and messages.

---

2. What happened to the natural world when the people broke this tradition?

When the people broke the tradition of listening to the voice of nature, the sky turned red, the ground shook, and the balance between humans and nature was disrupted, causing chaos and danger.

---

3. What feelings made the people return to the tree?

The people returned to the tree out of fear, confusion, and a desire to reconnect with nature after losing their way and being unable to survive without its guidance.
