- For each compound, start by drawing the electron dot diagrams for the individual atoms based on their valence electrons.
- Count the total valence electrons for all atoms in the molecule and ensure they are arranged so each atom (except hydrogen) achieves a full octet.
- Identify the central atom if there are more than two atoms; it is typically the atom with the lowest electronegativity or the one that appears only once in the formula.
- Pair up unpaired electrons from different atoms to form covalent bonds, using single, double, or triple bonds as needed to satisfy the octet rule for all atoms.
- Represent shared electron pairs as lines or circles between atoms and lone pairs as dots around the atoms.
