Show Answer Key & Explanations Step-by-step solution for: IGCSE Organic Chemistry 1: Introduction and Bonding | Teaching ...
- Chemical Bond: an attractive force between atoms or ions that binds them together as a unit.
- Atoms form bonds in order to:
- decrease potential energy
- increase stability
- Covalent Bonding: sharing of electron pairs between atoms.
- Ionic Bonding: transfer of electrons from one atom to another (forming positively and negatively charged ions that are held together by electrostatic attraction).
- Polar Covalent: An unequal attraction for shared electrons creating partial charges (dipoles) - uneven electron density.
- δ⁻ symbol for partially negative
- δ⁺ symbol for partially positive
- Non-polar: electrons are shared equally, creating uniform electron density.
- Electronegativity Define:
- RECALL: Electronegativity is the measure of an atom’s ability to attract shared electrons in a chemical bond.
- For Polar Covalent Bonds:
- higher electronegative atom = partial negative charge (δ⁻)
- lower electronegative atom = partial positive charge (δ⁺)
