The diaphragm is a large, dome-shaped muscle located at the base of the lungs. It contracts and flattens during inhalation, creating a vacuum that pulls air into the lungs. During exhalation, it relaxes and returns to its dome shape, pushing air out of the lungs.

The alveoli are tiny air sacs at the end of the bronchioles in the lungs. They are the site of gas exchange, where oxygen from the inhaled air diffuses into the bloodstream and carbon dioxide from the blood diffuses into the alveoli to be exhaled.
