- Count the total number of valence electrons for all atoms in the molecule or ion.
- Identify the central atom (usually the least electronegative atom, except hydrogen).
- Connect the central atom to the surrounding atoms with single bonds (each bond uses 2 electrons).
- Distribute the remaining electrons as lone pairs to satisfy the octet rule (or duet rule for hydrogen) for the outer atoms first.
- If the central atom does not have an octet, form double or triple bonds by converting lone pairs from outer atoms into bonding pairs.
- Check that the total number of electrons used matches the total valence electrons counted initially.
- For ions, add or subtract electrons based on the charge and place the structure in brackets with the charge indicated.
