Latitude & Longitude

Everywhere on Earth has a global address.
We write a global address using two numbers! They are called latitude and longitude.
The global address of a place can be found on a map called a globe map.

The Equator, the Prime Meridian, and the International Date Line are three imaginary lines on our globe.

Lines of latitude run east/west. They are horizontal lines that run parallel to the Equator!
The Equator's latitude is 0 degrees.

Lines of longitude run north/south. They are vertical lines that run from pole to pole to the Prime Meridian and the International Date Line.
The Prime Meridian's longitude is 0 degrees and the International Date Line's longitude is 180 degrees.

Did you know that our global address is latitude and longitude?
When we write latitude and longitude, we always put the latitude first and the longitude last.

🔍 Explanation of Key Concepts:

1. Global Address: Every point on Earth has a unique location defined by its latitude (distance north or south of the Equator) and longitude (distance east or west of the Prime Meridian).

2. Latitude Lines (Parallels):
- Run east-west.
- Are parallel to each other and to the Equator.
- Measured in degrees from 0° at the Equator to 90° at the poles.
- The Equator is 0° latitude.

3. Longitude Lines (Meridians):
- Run north-south.
- Converge at the poles.
- Measured from 0° at the Prime Meridian (Greenwich, England) to 180° east or west.
- The International Date Line is at 180° longitude.

4. Order of Coordinates:
- Always write latitude first, then longitude.
- Example: 40°N, 74°W (New York City)

5. Maps vs. Globes:
- A globe shows Earth accurately, including curved lines of latitude and longitude.
- Maps are flat representations that distort some features.
