The diaphragm is a large, dome-shaped muscle at the base of the lungs. It contracts and flattens when you inhale, creating a vacuum that pulls air into the lungs. When you exhale, it relaxes and moves upward, pushing air out of the lungs. The alveoli are tiny air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange occurs; oxygen from the inhaled air passes into the blood, and carbon dioxide from the blood passes into the alveoli to be exhaled.
