1. Brandon picked up a large red ball off the floor and tossed it toward his bookshelf.
2. “That’s!” squealed a high voice. “That’s!” screamed a low voice.
3. Brandon looked around. “Who said that?”
4. “I did,” said the high voice.
5. “And I added the low voice,” said the low voice.
6. Brandon stared at the shelf. “Where are you?”
7. “On the bookshelf,” called both voices.
8. Brandon moved closer. He sat and half-leaned on top of two books, one thin and one thick.
9. The ball almost knocked an off the shelf! It crashed! Thick Book.
10. “I’m sorry,” Brandon said. Then he bent over again. “What? Books can’t talk.”
11. “Sure we can,” jumped Thin Book. “We have lots of words inside of us.”
12. “But...” said Thick Book.
13. “Please sit and read us,” Thin Book said.
14. “And away from the edge, so we won’t fall off,” Thick Book added.
15. Brandon rolled the ball to the side. Then he eased both books against the others on the shelf.
16. “Thank you,” said Thin Book. “But could you please put us in order?”
17. “Order?”
