1. GRAINLINE:
A heavy double line with an arrow at each end.
It appears on all pattern pieces that aren't cut on the fold. The grainline indicates how to place the pattern piece exactly with the fabric's grain.
2. PLACE ON FOLD:
A single arrow that indicates the pattern edge is to be placed directly on the fold.
If it is off at all, it will change the shape of your pattern piece, and you may have to recut the pattern piece again.
3. NOTCHES:
extend beyond the cutting line symbols that extend beyond the edge. They are used for aligning and joining pattern pieces. If the edge does not match correctly, then you might be connecting the wrong pieces together.
Notches make your pattern piece into a puzzle. They help you to know how to match your seams correctly. If notches are cut incorrectly, make sure to count how many notches there are.
4. DOTS, SQUARES, TRIANGLES:
Symbols used to help align and join seam sections, especially areas that are gathered or eased. The markings should be transferred before sewing the pattern pieces.
Parent Tip: Review the logic above to help your child master the concept of sewing pattern worksheet.
