Show Answer Key & Explanations Step-by-step solution for: Y6 Science The Light Spectrum Differentiated Reading Comprehension ...
1. White light is a combination of all the colors of the visible spectrum.
2. White light separates into different colors because each color has a different wavelength and refracts (bends) by a different amount when passing through a medium like glass or water.
3. The visible light spectrum looks like a rainbow because it displays the continuous range of colors from red to violet, which are the colors our eyes can perceive when white light is dispersed.
4. A prism separates white light into its component colors by refraction; as light enters and exits the prism, different wavelengths bend at different angles, spreading the light into a spectrum.
5. Rainbows form when sunlight is refracted, reflected, and dispersed by water droplets in the atmosphere, separating the white light into its spectral colors.
6. There are seven main colors in the visible light spectrum: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.
7. Violet light bends the most because it has the shortest wavelength and is refracted more than the other colors when passing through a prism.
8. Red light bends the least because it has the longest wavelength and is refracted less than the other colors when passing through a prism.
9. You can demonstrate that white light is made of many colors by using a prism to split sunlight or a bright white light source into a spectrum on a wall or screen.
10. Newton discovered that white light is composed of all the colors of the spectrum by using a prism to disperse sunlight and then recombining the colors with a second prism to recreate white light.
