THE NORTHUMBRIAN CHRONICLE
Date: June 8th, 793 AD
Headline: TERROR FROM THE SEA! HOLY ISLAND RAIDED!
By Our Correspondent at Lindisfarne
Fear and shock have gripped our kingdom today after a horrific attack on the holy monastery at Lindisfarne. Early this morning, strange ships with dragon heads carved into the wood appeared on the horizon. We thought they might be traders, but we were wrong.
Men dressed in furs and iron helmets jumped from the boats. They did not want to trade; they wanted to destroy. They rushed into the church, smashing altars and stealing the gold cups and jewels dedicated to God. Many of our monks were killed, and others were dragged away in chains like animals.
We asked ourselves: Why would anyone attack God’s house? These men seem to have no fear of heaven. They took everything of value and burned what they could not carry. As their ships sailed away, loaded with our treasures, we were left praying for protection. This is a dark day for England. We must strengthen our defenses, for these "Vikings" may return.

THE VIKING SAGA
Date: Summer, 793 AD
Headline: GOLD AND GLORY FOUND IN THE WEST!
By Ragnar, Son of Erik
Today was a good day for our crew. After weeks of sailing across the cold sea, we finally spotted land. The locals call it "Lindisfarne." We saw a large building on an island that looked soft and weak. There were no soldiers guarding it, only men in long robes who ran away when they saw our axes.
Our chieftain led us onto the shore. We broke down the doors of their temple. Inside, we found shining crosses made of pure gold and gems that sparkled like ice. It was easy pickings! We filled our bags with treasure and took some of the men as slaves to help row our ships home.
Some of the younger warriors wanted to stay and fight more, but the chieftain said we had enough wealth for now. The people here are soft and pray to a god who does not give them strength in battle. We laughed as we sailed away. The sea wind was in our favor, and our ship was heavy with silver. We will tell tales of this easy victory around the fire tonight. Soon, we will look for more lands to visit.
