- Chunky Monkey: Look for a known "chunk" (like -and, -art, -old, -ing) or a word part (like be-, -er) to help decode the word.
- Eagle Eye: Examine the accompanying picture for visual clues that can help you figure out the word.
- Stretchy Snake: Slowly stretch out the sounds in the word (s-t-r-e-t-c-h) and blend them together to pronounce it correctly.
- Lips the Fish: Say the first few sounds of the word aloud, then read to the end of the sentence. Reread the entire sentence to confirm the word makes sense.
- Skippy Frog: If stuck, skip the difficult word, read to the end of the sentence, and then return to try the word again with context.
- Tryin’ Lion: Attempt to read the sentence again. If it doesn’t make sense, substitute a different word that fits the context.
