I cautiously approached the box, my heart pounding. "Who's in there?" I called out, my voice trembling slightly.
"Please, just open it!" the voice pleaded, sounding small and frightened.
Taking a deep breath, I reached down and gently lifted the lid. Inside, curled up and shivering, was a tiny, fluffy kitten with wide, terrified eyes. It let out a soft, pitiful mewl.
"Oh, you poor thing!" I whispered, carefully scooping the kitten into my arms. It felt so light and fragile. The box must have been left by someone who didn't want it anymore, or maybe it had gotten trapped inside.
I held the kitten close, feeling its tiny body shake against mine. "It's okay now," I murmured, stroking its soft fur. "You're safe." I knew I couldn't leave it on the street. I would take it home, give it warmth, food, and love. Maybe I'd even find its owner, but for now, this little life was counting on me. I smiled down at the kitten, already imagining its purrs and playful pounces. This unexpected encounter had turned into the best surprise of my day.
