- What Is Mesopotamia?
Mesopotamia is an ancient region located between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in modern-day Iraq, Kuwait, Syria, and Turkey. It is often called the "Cradle of Civilization" because it was home to some of the world’s earliest cities, writing systems, and complex societies.
- Farming and Food
People in Mesopotamia farmed wheat, barley, and dates using irrigation from the rivers. They raised animals like sheep, goats, and cattle. Their diet included bread, beer, fish, and vegetables.
- Society
Mesopotamian society was hierarchical, with kings and priests at the top, followed by scribes, merchants, farmers, and slaves. Cities were governed by rulers and had temples dedicated to gods.
- Buildings
Mesopotamians built ziggurats (massive stepped temples), mudbrick houses, and city walls for protection. Their architecture used sun-dried bricks and featured arched doorways and courtyards.
- Weapons and Tools
They used bronze weapons like spears and daggers, and tools such as plows, sickles, and hammers. Later, iron weapons replaced bronze ones.
- Technology and Language
Mesopotamians invented cuneiform, one of the first writing systems, written on clay tablets. They also developed the wheel, the plow, and early mathematics and astronomy.
- Did You Know…?
The Epic of Gilgamesh, one of the oldest known stories, was written in Mesopotamia. They also created the first legal code—the Code of Hammurabi.
- Beliefs
Mesopotamians were polytheistic, worshipping many gods associated with nature and human activities. Temples and rituals played a central role in daily life.
- Skills and Crafts
Skilled artisans made pottery, jewelry, textiles, and metalwork. Scribes were highly respected for their ability to read and write cuneiform.
