1. A flower stem opens, often displaying brightly coloured petals and releasing a strong scent to make it attractive to pollinators.
2. A pollinator (such as a bee, bird, bat, moth or beetle) lands on the flower to collect nectar.
3. Whilst collecting the nectar, the pollinator (e.g. bee) brushes against the male part of the flower and pollen transfers to the pollinator’s body.
4. The pollinator moves around the flower or to another flower of the same species. The pollen rubs off the pollinator and onto the stigma, which is the top of the female part of the flower. This is called pollination.
5. The sex cell from the pollen grain moves from the stigma, down the style, and into the ovary, where it fuses with an ovule. The meeting of ovule and pollen is called fertilisation.
6. The fertilised ovule grows into a seed.
