Hormones make the
ovaries begin preparing an
ovum around every 28 days.
The ovum travels down the
fallopian tube. This process takes around 2 days.
As the egg travels down the tube, the endometrium, the special material inside the
uterus, begins to grow and get thicker.
The endometrium is preparing to grow a egg into a
baby.
If the ovum (egg) is not fertilised, it starts to
dissolve. The endometrium needs to be cleaned or it can't support a baby. This cleaning process is called
menstruation.
Tampons and
compresses are used to catch the blood as it leaves the
vagina.
Compresses need to be changed at least every few hours. Tampons must be changed after no more than
eight hours.
