A vaccine works by introducing a weakened or inactive form of a pathogen, or parts of it, into the body. This stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies and memory cells without causing the disease. If the person is later exposed to the actual pathogen, the immune system recognizes it quickly and mounts a strong response, preventing illness.
